Target

Third Sector (such as Cooperatives, Non-Governmental Organizations, Associations) professionals, social entrepreneurs, social workers, teachers, legal and medical professionals, cultural mediators, local authorities, law enforcement agencies.

Objectives

The course aims to provide practical knowledge and tools for resolving community conflicts, often resulting from easily identifiable social and cultural misunderstandings. Starting from the analysis of community mediation and the basic concepts and tools of conflict mediation, the aim is to provide useful strategies for the development of fundamental skills for dealing with conflict situations on both a personal and a professional level.

Programme

Part I - 1 day

– Definition of Community Mediation: involved actors, the will to mediate, building a promise of mediation
– Fundamentals on restorative justice, and on the concept of safe community, conflict perception, conflict definition
– Fundamentals on the concepts of community, integration, tolerance, voluntary participation, bullying, conflict, verbal violence and abuses, marginalization
– Understanding the points of view of the other people: techniques of conflict resolution
– Mediation techniques and voluntary participation
– Practical strategies in using mediation and intervention techniques
– Legal framework

Part II - 1 day

– The ethnography of the community mediation practice applied to local projects and programmes: neighboroods, buildings, apartments, schools, and work places
– Awareness of own answers to the conflict
– Awareness of the other people’s answers to the conflict
– Restorative justice and retributive justice
– The “winners” and the “losers” in mediation
– Practical activity: identification and management of biases and stereotypes as causes of conflicts in the communities

Training method

The workshop can be delivered both remotely/on line, or entirely or partially in-person.

Training material

At the end of the workshop, the slides and PowerPoint presentations will be delivered in electronic format to the attendees. During the workshop, web pages and useful links relating to the different parts of the programme will be provided, and used as a fundamental support for the practical activities and exercises.

Duration

12 hours. Upon request, it is possible to hold shorter workshops to explore one or more topics of the programme.
